North Carolina To Purchase Grandfather Mountain

Excellent news! Governor Mike Easley announced North Carolina has agreed to purchase Grandfather Mountain, thus preserving one of the state's well-known landmarks. For more information, read the article in the Asheville Citizen-Times.

Go NC!

Well, finally some good news!!! I hope they keep it as a state park.

There's always a part of me that remains paranoid...ha! I read an article recently about state forest that might get strip mined (northeast NC...I need to go back and find the article...I could be mistaken). But if the area is designated as a state park, that would seem to make it "safer" from environmental exploitation.

So this is great news. And yet another reason why I read your blog. Thanks for the information and the article. It made my day.

I finally understand more about wildlife and forest management, and thus why hunting is allowed in parks and nature areas and why prescribed fires are conducted (especially in Longleaf Pine savannas. I wish my botanist friend would post a few articles here!) But strip mining? HOW????

Yes, please, if you find that article send it to me. I'll see if a few of my fellow ENC CA group members are interested in going on an endangered plant hunting expedition :o)

My apologies! I was wrong. It wasn't about state forest. The issue is concerning wetlands. I'm tired lately and not thinking straight...shew.

But it still has me very concerned. I think the article was dated in May, but I haven't been able to find out what happened or anything else about it. If you or any of your friends know what happened, please let me know.

Anyway, here's the link from the News & Observer. http://www.newsobserver.com/news/story/1083797.html

I'm not sure who owns the land? (It's fine if you don't want to post this comment with the link...I won't throw a fit...feel free to delete...ha). I should have e-mailed you, but I'm being lazy. Thanks, lady!

I don't mind posting the link. I'm astounded and hope someone can explain this, or better, tell us it failed?

I posted a query to the CarolinasAdventures hiking group, aka the reason and inspiration for this blog. Hopefully some of the ENC members have some information. Thanks for sharing this.
