Firefighter Dies at Big Bradley Falls

A member of my hiking group forwarded the following article to the list today. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Curtis Jessen, who fell at Big Bradley Falls in western North Carolina while fighting a fire.

Oh, so sad! Dang, this is horrible! My heart grieves for the family. This also underlines what you were saying about how dangerous the mountains can be. It also makes me think about how people like firefighters risk their lives every day (and we often take it for granted...or at least I know I have). I will keep his family in my thoughts and prayers!

I know how you feel. Death is difficult enough, but it breaks my heart when a firefighter, a law enforcement officer, or others die in the line of duty. I nearly cried when nine firefighters died in a building collapse in Charleston last year, and again when eight firemen died in a helicopter crash in California a few weeks ago. How sad for them, fo their families, and for their colleagues. It's a wonder anyone replaces them, but thankfully, someone always does.

I appreciate the author of The Graveyard Shift (http://www.leelofland.com/wordpress/) who takes time each week to honor the fallen.
